Plugin & Scale Up: Working To Help EV Charging Businesses Scale

Who holds back the electric car? No-one per se. But in order to ensure they become more widely adopted, one of the main challenges is developing a network of charging stations.

Currently there are only 175,318 fast and normal charging points in Europe. The European Commission estimates that at least 2.8 million electric charging points will be needed across the EU by 2030 ahead, ACEA acknowledges that, beginning of the next decade.

The gauntlet has been well and truly thrown down. But our customer – Everon, the EV (electric vehicle) charging management platform – is working to propel the sector forward by expanding these numbers significantly.

However, in order to scale their offering, Everon needed to find a reliable, forward-thinking partner who understood their technology – which is exactly why they began working with Levi9.

Providing The Right Resources To Get The Job Done

Everon’s aim is to enable businesses to create their own dynamic charging network, by delivering EVBox charging posts. They’d been doing just great when they got in touch – they’d already rolled out their platform in over 100,000 charging points in more than 55 countries.

However, to meet growing demand, Everon needed to develop new functionality and flexible options within its core application. Basically, they needed a lot of new developers to help them develop the platform, web applications, and mobile apps.

In fact, 16 teams of developers were required: to tackle everything from both a front- and a back-end perspective – including technical debt and developments around data.

“Our charging point management platform is set up to be entirely scalable as a service, and Levi9 has helped us do that. For us, it’s a unique opportunity to grow in this relatively young and promising market,” says Joeri Kamp, COO, Everon.

“Levi9 has a reputation as a reliable partner, so you know they deliver, and you know you can count on satisfaction as a client. All those things played a role in the choice”.

Having A Shared Mission For Future Success

Another important consideration for Everon when choosing its development partners was a shared mission and purpose – as well as a compatible culture. This was certainly true for Everon when selecting Levi9. They were particularly impressed with the fact 40% of our employees are female.

With these shared values giving them additional confidence, Everon continues to push the boundaries of EV technology, develop new solutions, and ultimately scale in a way that’s consistent with their aims and ambitions.

As the world wakes up to new perspectives on work, transport, and mobility; the moment couldn’t be more opportune for the EV sector to innovate at scale.

The need for collaboration is greater than ever. Levi9 continues to work closely with Everon to ensure its technology not only meets, but exceeds, its scope for future growth.

Software development

Software Development Services

When it comes to tailor-made software solutions for business technology, innovation is all about increasing the pace of delivery. Speed influences the time to market and indirectly affects the costs associated with the project.

At Levi9, we deliver new technologies that facilitate this pace of delivery. We focus on smart orchestration and the integration of services, open source components, and customized software.

Our Technology vision:

  • Accelerated development – where we focus on the pace of delivery by combining unique, tailor-made software with open source components and managed and 3rd party services – such as serverless functions
  • Cloud – where we use Cloud services in order to eliminate the need of provisioning and managing infrastructure so our teams can focus more on generating business value for our customers
  • Data – where we utilize data processing in order to help our customers extract the assets associated with the data being processed

Assessment

The assessment will be facilitated by a Solution Architect. Together with the customer we will define current situation and identify potential bottlenecks and improvements. Afterward we will present the conclusion, improvement suggestions, options, relevant pro’s and con’s, breakdown of potential necessary activities and cost indication.

Our Solution Architects are senior professionals, part of the Levi9 Architect Group. Levi9 has an extensive group of Solution Architects who specialize in different technologies. We take great care to keep on expanding their knowledge through professional trainings, certifications, conferences and seminars.

Continuous involvement

The solution architect is (partly) assigned to a customer team. They keep up to date with new, relevant topics and pro-actively propose solutions and innovations.

What can we do for you?

  • Architectural and application quality assessments
  • Architectural concept and design
  • Technology stack selection
  • Second opinion
  • System performance review

Collaborative requirements creation

Collaborative requirements services

You have a great business idea yet you are struggling to transform it into a fully operational software product. Thereby it is essential to identify the factors that will influence your success by doing a proper assessment of the potential pitfalls. For this purpose, profound knowledge and understanding of both market and technology are required.

Co-creation

Based on years of experience with different types of software development projects across various industries and domains, Levi9 developed a structured approach to guide you through the initial Research & Development. After that, Levi9 will act as your partner for the end-to end implementation through Agile methodology, followed by future enhancements and ongoing product support.

It all starts with giving your idea the right direction and narrowing down the possibilities to come to an initial set of features that will form the foundation of your new product.

We call this first phase Ideation, which consists of 3 time-boxed steps: Brainstorming, Idea collection and Idea development

Brainstorming takes place in a group of both customer and Levi9 team members and is meant to inspire as many ideas as possible in a spontaneous way. Levi9 facilitates and stimulates the discussion by not limiting the number of ideas brought forward, by offering no criticism and by welcoming ‘wild’, out-of-the-box concepts.

During the second step, Idea collection, the ideas listed are put into the perspective of your business, the current market and the latest technological developments. By elaborating and combining the ideas, they can be narrowed down to a single one

During the last step, Idea development, the selected idea is broken down into high level features. These features represent the most important and complex functionalities of the application. We will help to define these features and to identify potentially challenging technical aspects. Together, we will gather the relevant input and create a backlog for a Proof of Concept.

Validate the business idea

The next phase, Proof of Concept (PoC), is typically used to validate the selected business idea, to provide clean choices and to minimize the risks associated with a solution. The PoC is executed by an interdisciplinary team comprised of a Product Owner (a role typically fulfilled by a customer representative), as well as technical and domain experts from Levi9.

The general approach is to validate the envisioned solution in a time-boxed manner.

The two most important elements of this phase are conclusiveness of the solution’s feasibility and time-boxing, which is to limit the timeline, resources and the effort invested in validating the direction taken.

As the first step, Solution design is used to shape a solution for the selected idea. The multidisciplinary team works together to define the applicable (technical) solution. Together with the Product Owner, acceptance criteria are defined, which is to describe what is to be considered as a conclusive (positive/negative) confirmation of the solution.

During the second step, Rapid development, the technical implementation is developed to a level sufficient to either confirm or dismiss a solution. The implementation process itself is organized along the lines of Scrum methodology, with frequent feedback moments, and is time-boxed.

The last step, Solution evaluation looks at the results of development and evaluates the solution in light of the acceptance criteria. Everyone involved takes part in the evaluation, and it is one of the main go/no-go mechanisms for full-scale development. If the PoC phase has shown that the solution implemented or even the initial idea is wrong - there is no point in continuing in this direction. Therefore, this phase can include multiple iterations, each aiming to test a new hypothesis/idea.

When the outcome is positive, full-scale development starts. Levi9 uses Feature-based development to ensure that end-user feedback is collected is early as possible, and to continuously align the software in development with the expectations of the stakeholders.
